slumdog and destiny

A movie is a depiction of the lucid flow of thoughts in the mind of a director.

Danny Boyle’s did it.
This guy has very well succeeded in portraying the actuality that resides in the slum .He has made us realize that what we otherwise feel FILTH is the LIFE that these people actually live …and that too sans horrid complications.
I rather don’t dwell upon the story of the movie … I would pass the honour to some accomplished movie critic for the same … I m just intrigued by some issues which played an important role in twisting Jamal’s fortune .
“It was written”. This was the caption that marked the end of this wonderful cinematic extravaganza. I loved the movie for this ….
“DESTINY IS NOT A FUNCTION OF HOPE AND SUPERNATURAL BLESSINGS …. INSTEAD IT IS A SYSTEMATIC SEQUENCING OF OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCE.”
Jamal became a millionare not because he was helped by some super power , but because he got an opportunity where he could melt down the experiences that he had gained from the hardships of a slumdog’s life. He oriented his randomly gained dexterity in the direction where he could gain the best out of the situation. It happened to him ,this was scripted by Nature . That is what was his “destiny” ,.
This movie is an answer to all the wonderful people who eulogize destiny as a power play of luck, when in reality it is entirely camaraderie of a person’s presence of mind and his circumspection.
[Kudos mr boyle ! … great job. If nothing else you made my crappy brain inhabit something worthwhile for some time atleast !]

I always believed, it was the things you don't choose that makes you who you are. Your city. Your neighborhood. Your family. People here take pride in these things. Like it was something they'd accomplished.

The bodies around their souls. The cities wrapped around those. I lived on this block my whole life. Most of these people have. When your job is to find people who are missing, it helps to know where they started. I find the people who started in the cracks, and then fell through. This city can be hard.

When I was young, I asked my priest, how you could get to heaven and still protect yourself from all the evil in the world. He told me what God said to his children. "You are sheep among wolves, be wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves."

There's no such thing as destiny. There are only different choices. It's just a number. Some choices are easy; Some aren't. Those are the really important ones, The ones that define us as people.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What if there were no words? What if there was no such word like "Destiny"? Would you feel the same about it the way you feel now? Are all our feelings derived from these word? Words that have no feelings? Were words created for communicating your feelings to others or your own self? Or were they created to create feelings within you? When i say feelings, I mean that Chemical that we all have in our brains that start having a reaction which causes us to act in a certain manner at a certain moment, this moment could prolong years or subside within that very moment only?

So are we all about these words? Are these words the cause of what we are today? Are these words the only mean by which we could define ourselves or our feelings or anything that we are?

well said "words"....how can mere "words" complete the human entity imbibed in us???u said it right
... hadnt been for these words, i fear the world wouldnt hav been the same place as it is today..
we would hav been sitting and tearing rawflesh in some dense uncivilised jungle...
destiny may be a superfluous word created by human civilisation ,but this abstract term is a reflection of a reality which none of us can deny.
two sisters bon an brought up in same situation with same level of intelligence and exposure are still different ,they hav different paths and different doings...jus because they are destined to...
destiny is as integral to this universe as our souls ...
cities may be harsh ,opportunities may be different ...but anything will be if it is destined to be ...
yes its just choices which define us and its nature which decides which choices we make
.....so ultimately we are mere puppets at the hands of time and destiny

Regarding what you said about the depiction of slums in Mumbai, now I haven't seen Slumdog yet but till date, one movie that came close to capturing the twisting, chaotic reality of our slums was Salaam Bombay and I'd be very surprised if Slumdog manages to top that.

Quite a novel take on the movie though, thanks for the read.
